Overview

The Western Digital WD Purple 8TB Surveillance Hard Drive is purpose-built for continuous 24/7 video recording in compatible DVR and NVR security systems. With 8TB of storage capacity, it provides extended footage retention for residential, retail, commercial and multi-camera CCTV installations.

WD Purple features AllFrame technology, designed to optimise the write-intensive, low-bit-rate and high-stream-count workloads typical of surveillance applications. This helps reduce dropped video frames and improves recording and playback performance in compatible security systems.

Using CMR recording technology and a SATA 6Gb/s interface, current WD Purple 8TB models support up to 64 single-stream HD cameras and offer sustained transfer speeds of up to 215MB/s. The drives are rated for workloads of up to 180TB per year, making them suitable for demanding always-on surveillance environments.

The 8TB range also supports systems with up to 16 drive bays and includes RV sensors and tarnish-resistant components to improve reliability in multi-drive NVR installations. WD specifies an MTBF of up to 1 million hours and provides a 2-year limited manufacturer warranty.
